Tom Duprey studied jazz composition at the New England Conservatory and has been freelancing as a trumpet player in the Boston area since the mid-1980s. He played in the George Russell combo, learned how to develop a personal style from Hankus Netsky, and was fortunate to have the incomparable Ran Blake as a teacher, inspiration, and mentor. Duprey is Jazz and Classical Trumpet faculty at Wellesley College. His latest project, led by his friend and fellow NEC grad James Merenda, is TickleJuice, a journey to parts unknown, though listeners may hear familiar influences. Incorporating sounds reminiscent of Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman, with a similar cacophonous intensity to Albert Ayler, in their debut album, Roots to the Stars (2014), improvisation meets liquid jazz, Bulgarian reggae, and Michael Jackson at a rock concert, shaken (not stirred) with your local orchestra and resident street musicians.
